A Look At Some Of The Qualities Found In The Best Knives

by Gregg Hall

For a person like me who is from the rustic section of the world, keeping an old time small knife in the pocket is not a fashion but proves to be one of the most essential things to have when going out. It is just not possible to tell when the cute little thing may come to have a great use for you. You may face a situation when you may need to cut things or peel or may need to sharpen a pencil suddenly and unexpectedly. Who can tell? The trend of keeping a blade clipped in the pocket is not new and has been in existence for many decades. Even during the age of my grandfather, people also used to keep the Old-Timer knife in their pockets, treating it as a part of life.

To be very candid, I am a knife enthusiast and for this I give the total responsibility to my father who had encouraged me a lot in collecting the cutleries. My two brothers have an equal attraction to good knives just like me. We all appreciate good knives, especially the wondrously looking old-fashioned pocketknives. The prevailing fashion has changed a lot with a wide assortment of 440C steel knives with varied designs. From ATS 34 and 154 CM we skipped off to VG 10 and D2 and at last we have come to an era of steel. The existing types of knives are usually made from S30 V. The S30 V specification of steel is the best to make knives. Had there been such materials in the past, things would have doubtlessly been different. Although, the market has come up with a mind blowing assortment of the knives, I personally prefer the heavy duty utility knives that are committed unswervingly to do any kind of job.

How to Find a Good Knife

If you are among those men who are really searching for an old time knife to be kept in the pocket wherever you go, then you may be glad to know that it is quite easy to get such a thing now a days. As a matter of fact, you do not have to search for such a pocketknife very far. You can just search for it on the web.

One of the most significant things that should be kept in mind is that the online markets are offering an awesome collection of knives with modern designs and more attractive looks. The contemporary folding blades of the modern age are so eye pleasing, efficient and sturdy that it can attract just about any person. From the small trendy pocket sets to large knives, you can go online to have a huge set of options to choose from.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Beach Florida.
A Look At A Variety Of Pocket Knives

by Gregg Hall

A pocket knife is a folding knife with a blade that fits inside the handle and that is small enough to fit in a pocket, with blades no larger than 3 to 5 in. in length. These knives are very versatile tools, and can be used for anything from opening an envelope, to cutting rope, to slicing fruit.

Pocket knives can cost anywhere from $1 at convenience stores, to thousands of dollars for custom, hand-crafted pieces. Well-made knives start at around $20.

Most light duty pocket knives are slip joints, which means the blade does not lock, but once it's opened it locks in place by a spring device that allows the blade to fold with a certain amount of pressure applied.

These knives often have more than one blade, (serrated, plain edged, saws) as well as a other tools such as bottle openers, corkscrews and scissors. A large tool selection is the signature of the Swiss Army Knife. These knives are issued to the army and sold to the public.

The German Army knife is large but light, with two blades opening from each side. It has hard plastic grips and aluminum liners. The United States Army knife used to have blades susceptible to rust and brass liners but now all Stainless Steel and very heavy and rugged. It has four blades opening from the same side. The handle, has rough edges, but can be rounded.

There are many traditional types of folding knives:
A pen knife: a small, thin knife with one or two pen blades, that does not interfere with the appearance of dress clothes, when carried in a pocket.

The Leatherman: similar combination of tools compete with multi-bladed knives, but most of these are too large for carrying in a pocket. The "main blade" is typically a pair of pliers and there is typically one non-locking knife blade.

Locking Knife: medium-sized lock back knife with deer-antler grips, nickel-silver bolsters and brass liners

Locking Pocket Knives became popular in the 1900's. Companies like Buck, Benchmade, Camillus, Gerber, Kershaw Letherman and Spyderco, to name a few, have created a wide range of products with locks of all types. This most popular form is similar to a slip joint, except that instead of the user releasing the blade with pressure, the user has to press on a lever on the back of the knife handle to release the blade, adding a level of safety. There are other types of locks; some of the more popular ones are the liner lock, the frame lock, and the Axis lock.

Even the Swiss Army knife has adopted the locks on some knives. Leatherman tools are now available with locking blades. Most locking knives have only one blade, as large as can be fit in the handle. An electrician's knife typically has a locking screwdriver blade but a non-locking knife blade.

Nearly all pocket knives are legal to own, but they increasingly face legal restrictions on their use. While pocket knives are almost always used as tools, they do have the potential to become weapons. In many places it is illegal to conceal knives larger than a certain size, or with certain locking or opening mechanisms.

They are often banned or heavily restricted in secure areas, such as schools and airports. Switchblades and other "auto-openers" are banned from interstate shipment by the U.S. Government and prohibited entirely in many places, including 37 US states. Nevertheless, they retain a significant following, associated with those who enjoy camping, hunting, fishing, and so on.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. The model used by the actual Swiss Army has an aluminum-plated handle.

This knife is synonymous with the pocketknife. It is often descriptive with a sort of tool, such as a software tool, that is a family of special-purpose tools.

There are various types and styles of Swiss Army knives each with its own tool combination for a specific task/s. Although red SAKs are most common, black, blue, white, phosphorescent yellow, camouflage patterns, and other colors are available. The plastic cladding is usually opaque but may be transparent; metal- and wood-clad models are available.
Founded in 1884, since 1891 the company has delivered knives to the Swiss Army. The famous emblem, a cross in a shield, has been used by Victorinox since 1909. That year, the mother of founder Karl Elsener died the name of the company changed to "Victoria" in her honor. In 1921, with the introduction of "inox" (the French term for Stainless Steel) into their products, the brand and name of the company became the present Victorinox.

In 2005 Victorinox acquired Wenger, the other official supplier of the Swiss Army knife. Victorinox intends to keep both brands intact.
Swiss Army knives are widely used outside the army. They are useful multifunctional instruments for everyday life and are available in a wide variety of sizes and functional combinations. Even NASA Astronauts have a Victorinox knife as standard equipment. Victorinox knives have also been taken to Mt. Everest and the Arctic. The flagship model of Victorinox, the Swiss Champ, is in the New York Museum of Modern Art's Permanent Design Collection.

About the Author

Gregg Hall is an author living in Navarre Florida. It was claimed by Bowie’s brother, Rezin that the knife used in this fight was made by a blacksmith by the name of Snowden, not Jesse Cleft who is generally given credit with making the original Bowie Knife after Rezin’s design from an old file.

Bowie returned, with his knife, to Texas and was involved in a knife fight with three men who had been hired to kill him. Bowie killed the three would be assassins with his new knife and the fame of the knife was established. Legend says that one man was almost decapitated, the second was disemboweled, and the third had his skull split open. Bowie died at the Battle of the Alamo five years later and both he and his knife became immensely famous. The fate of the original Bowie knife is unknown; however, a knife bearing the engraving "Bowie No. 1" has been acquired by the Historic Arkansas Museum from a Texas collector and has been attributed to Black through scientific analysis.

Possible the most famous of the Bowie Knives was the one designed by Bowie himself and given to an Arkansas blacksmith named James Black as a carved wood prototype. Black made the actual knife to Bowie’s specification and also created another with a sharpened edge on the curved top edge of the blade. Bowie was given his choice of the two and he chose the one that Black had modified. This type of knife is known as the Sheffield Bowie today, so named for the cutlery factories in Sheffield, England who due to the knife’s popularity began mass producing it and exporting it to the U.S. by 1850. These knives usually had a handle made from hardwood, stag horn, or bone and occasionally came with a guard.

The blacksmith James Black soon did a booming business making and selling these knives out of his shop in Washington, Arkansas. Black continued to refine his technique and improve the quality of the knife as he went. In 1839, Black was nearly blinded by an attacker and was no longer able to continue in his trade.

Black's knives were known to be exceedingly tough, yet flexible, and his technique has not been duplicated. Black kept his technique secret and did all of his work behind a leather curtain. Many claim that Black rediscovered the secret to producing true Damascus steel.

In 1870 at the age of 70, Black attempted to pass on his secret to the son of the family that had cared for him in his old age, Daniel Webster Jones. But Black had been retired for many years and found that he himself had forgotten the secret. The only thing Black could remember was that ten separate steps were involved. Jones would later become Governor of Arkansas.

Gregg Hall is a business consultant and author for many online and offline businesses and lives in Navarre Florida with his 16 year old son.
A Closer Look At The Bowie Knife

The term Bowie Knife which is commonly used today refers to any large sheath knife but it also applies directly to the specific original design by Colonel James "Jim" Bowie and originally created by James Black.

The historical Bowie knife was not a single design, but was actually a series of knives improved several times by Jim Bowie over the years.

The model most commonly known as the historical Bowie knife was somewhat large and of massive construction, as knives go, having usually a blade at least six inches long and 12 inches was not uncommon, with a relatively broad blade that was an inch and a half to two inches wide and made of steel usually between 3/16" and 1/4" thick. The back of the blade often had a strip of soft metal (normally brass or copper) inlaid intended to catch an opponent's blade, a concept borrowed from the medieval Scottish dirk, and also often had an upper guard that bent forward at an angle, also intended to catch an opponent's blade. The back edge of the curved clip point, also called the "false edge," was often sharpened in order to allow someone trained in European techniques of saber fencing to execute the maneuver called the "back cut" or "back slash." A brass guard was attached to protect the hand, usually cast in a mold. It is likely that the blade shape was derived from the Spanish clasp knives carried in Spain and the Spanish colonies in the Americas.

Bowie was known for his many knife fights which is why the original Bowie Knife was designed primarily as a weapon. The shape and style of blade was chosen so that the Bowie knife could serve usefully as a camp and hunting tool as well as a weapon. Many knives and daggers existed that could serve well as weapons, and many knives existed that could serve well as tools for hunters and trappers, but the Bowie knife was designed to do both jobs well, and is still popular with hunters and sportsmen even in the present day.

The curved portion of the edge, toward the point, is for removing the skin from a carcass, and the straight portion of the edge, toward the guard, is for chores involving cutting slices. The blade is generally long enough and heavy enough that the knife can be used as a hatchet or machete, but not so heavy or long as to be cumbersome. Most such knives intended for hunting are only sharpened on one edge, to reduce the danger of cutting oneself while butchering and skinning the carcass.

Starting in the 1970’s a version of the Bowie Knife with sawteeth on the back side of the blade have been very popular with knife collectors, probably due to the knife being displayed and used by Sylvester Stallone’s character in the original “Rambo” movie. These knives are still popular today and are sold as survival knives in many cases and are manufactured with a hollow handle that could carry small survival items.

The actual usefulness of sawteeth on a knife is debatable, not to mention the hollow handles, which may be prone to breaking if the knife is poorly constructed, and many contend that the sharp teeth endanger the user when used to gut and skin a large animal carcass such as a deer or elk, as well as making the knife much less useful as a weapon as they make it prone to getting stuck. A proper Bowie knife is long enough and heavy enough that the user can usually chop through wood with it much faster than he could use the saw teeth.

Avid fans of the Bowie knife say that for a knife to be called a “Bowie”, it has to be long enough to be used as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, wide enough to use as a paddle, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet.

Gregg Hall is a business consultant and author for many online and offline businesses and lives in Navarre Florida with his 16 year old son.
How To Filet A Fish

I have been an avid fisherman since I was a child, which was quite awhile ago. I have been fishing regularly for over 30 years and I have seen a lot of people who cannot properly clean their fish after catching it so I thought I might offer a little guidance.

First, it is absolutely crucial that you have a very sharp knife. I personally use an electric filet knife a lot, but you really have to have some experience to be able to use one properly. Using a standard filet knife, I prefer to use one with about an eight inch blade unless I am filleting a large gamefish in which case I will break out my “Crocodile Dundee” Alaskan Filet knife.

To begin filleting the fish, place it on a sturdy surface preferably about waist high for comfort. Take the tip of the knife and insert it along the dorsal fin of the fish and make small cuts towards the head keeping the blade against the bones of the fin. Now make a deep cut right behind the gill plate from the belly vertically up to the back of the fish meeting the cut you made along the spine.

Now, go back to the spine area where you made your fist cuts and now take deeper cuts following along the spine and ribcage and then work your way towards the tail. Stop short of the tail leaving that intact so that the filet you have is still attached to the rest of the fish at that point. Turn the fish so that the belly is towards you now and make any cuts to separate your filet in that area, then flip the filet over so that the scales are down and the meat side is up. This is where you really need to be sure your knife is sharp, starting near the tail hold the blade of your knife close as possible to the skin of the fish and begin to slide the blade back and forth towards the shoulder of the fish until you have completely removed the meat from the skin.

The final step for this side of the fish is to check the lateral line for small bones and cartilage and the bloodline. Some fish such as amberjack will have a large bloodline which you will want to remove for optimum taste. After you are sure all the bones and bloodline have been removed place this filet to the side and start on the next side. Doing it in this order is a personal preference, you can also complete the filleting of the other side first and then do the fine tuning of removing the bloodline and small bones.

Gregg Hall is a business consultant and author for many online and offline businesses and lives in Navarre Florida with his 16 year old son.
